The local chapter of the American Postal Workers Union is preparing for the end of overnight delivery as the US Postal Services consolidates and changes its standards.

Paducah Local 2500 Vice President Gerl McKinney says the postal service standards will change Jan. 5, 2015, and the Paducah processing facility is set to close April 1, 2015, eliminating overnight delivery.

Tennessee Post Offices are shredding thousands of children’s books each month after USPS officials changed their policy enforcement procedures. The shredded books are part of the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation program, which ships one free book a month to about 213,000 children in the state.

A special postmark is being issued as part of the re-enactment of the Civil War Battle of Sacramento in western Kentucky. The U.S. Postal Service will offer the postmark starting Tuesday as part of a series of commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which took place from 1861 to 1865. The postmark will be available at a log cabin near the battlegrounds in Sacramento. The Battle of Sacramento took place on December 28, 1861 between Union Major Eli H. Murray and Confederate Col. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
