Update:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a release on Friday that the Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge will close at 6 p.m. as floodwaters approach the levee.

They said the bridge is expected to be closed for a week but could be extended if the flood crest is revised upward.

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet official says the public prefers rebuilding the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge in a new location, after a round of public meetings in Cairo, Illinois, and La Center this week.

Spokesperson Keith Todd said the other options KYTC is exploring in its long-range study include rebuilding the bridge at its current site and rehabilitating the current bridge.

Todd attended the Cairo meeting and says most people he spoke with preferred rebuilding the bridge, which he said would be best done near the current structure.

The first of two public meetings concerning the future of the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge is tonight from 4-7 at Cairo High School.

Kentucky and Illinois highway officials are working with the Federal Highway Administration to gather public input on the nearly 80-year-old  structure. The bridge could be repaired or replaced.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane this week on the US 51/60/62 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Kentucky, and Cairo, Illinois.
