Audit Finds DOE Acted Illegally in Transferring Enriched Uranium to USEC's Paducah Plant

A report from the Government Accountability Office finds that the Department of Energy may have illegally transferred uranium to the troubled United States Enrichment Corporation, potentially costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.

USEC operates the DOE-owned Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and is currently in shutdown phases and reorganizing through Chapter 11 bankruptcy

DOE Ships Paducah Plant Debris Cross-Country In Cleanup Effort

Twenty-eight rail cars filled with debris from demolition of part of the Department of Energy’s Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant site have been delivered to Energy Solutions in Clive, Utah. 1,920 tons of steel beams, plates, piping and equipment removed from a metals reduction plant in February were sent to the radioactive waste disposal facility 80 miles west of Salt Lake City.  The first five cars left Paducah July 15th and the last shipment arrived in Utah August 8th.

Paducah Leaders Meet with GE-Hitachi, International Isotopes

At least two companies are preparing to respond to Department of Energy requests for offers at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

General Electric-Hitachi Global Laser Enrichment and International Isotopes Incorporated are among a list of ten companies that showed initial interest, and have until Aug. 14 to complete a formal offer for the DOE.

Ky. Energy Secretary Hopeful for a Good Start on PGDP Deactivation This Year

After meeting Monday with new U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Len Peters said he is hopeful for a good start on deactivation of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant this year, with decontamination beginning in fiscal year 2015.

The United States Enrichment Corporation is in the shutdown process at the DOE-owned plant after failing to negotiate a new federal contract.

Beshear Calls Energy Sec. Meeting a “Productive Exchange" on PGDP

Gov. Steve Beshear met with new U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz Monday,  regarding the uncertain future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and its 1,100 workers.

Beshear called his meeting with Moniz  a “productive exchange.”

USEC Continuing Shutdown

  The United State Enrichment Corporation is at work shutting down its operations at Paducah’s Gaseous Diffusion Plant. The shutdown comes after losing a federal contract to continue uranium enrichment operations at the Department of Energy owned site.
