On March 2, 2012, the eastern Kentucky coal town of West Liberty was hit by an EF-3 tornado, which caused extensive damage to its downtown area, destroying homes and businesses, killing six people and injuring 75. Murray’s Fire Department starts a new program today making it easier to locate people in storm shelters after natural disasters.

Murray Fire Marshal Dickie Walls says emergency responders search all damaged structures after natural disasters, but storm shelters’ locations aren’t always obvious. 

Murray Rotarian Keith Travis offers a direct avenue for assisting post-tornadic restoration of normalcy or close to it for those who lost their homes or livelihoods in Little Rock, Arkansas earlier this week. Little Rock's Rotary Club 99 is going to be the local fiduciary for donations. Rotary clubs throughout the Purchase are providing collection points for checks and cash. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin addressed his colleagues in Congress yesterday about helping Illinois recover from severe weekend storms.

Durbin made the comments shortly after a phone call with the director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

He says the widespread damages will require coordinated local, state and federal resources. He says he is ready to help endure federal funding heads to Illinois.

Monday, an EF-4 tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma leaving many homes destroyed and families searching to find their loved ones. Within hours, organizations across the nation began efforts to help the victims and provide relief to disaster responders. Here’s how you can help in your area:

National Weather Service forecasters say a line of storms moving in out of the west this afternoon will bring a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes lasting into the evening.

The National Weather Service is using a new severe weather warning system in Kentucky starting April 1. NWS spokesperson Rick Shanklin says the Impact Based Warning System is primarily for tornado warnings, especially after the 2011 Joplin, Mo., tornado.

This weekend’s rainfall has briefly alleviated dropping water levels on the Mississippi River, but it didn't put a dent in persisting drought conditions in the area. National Weather Service meteorologist Robin Smith says most places in western Kentucky got 4 to 5 inches but they are still up to 20 inches below average rainfall. The Mississippi River levels are between 12 and 13 feet but Smith expects those levels to drop back to 5 feet in just a few weeks.

2012 Brought More TN Tornadoes

New data shows Tennessee had more tornadoes in 2012 than in previous years. The National Weather Service says 34 tornadoes were recorded across the state last year with 20 occurring in March alone.  NWS meteorologist Bobby Boyd says the average year brings 21 tornadoes to Tennessee.
