Tenn. Public Health Department Issues New Steroid Warning

Tennessee health officials will start contacting hundreds of people who received steroid injuection for back pain from a pharmacy linked to a fungal meningitis outbreak to warn them about another infection.  Dr. David Reagan, chief medical officer for the Tennessee Department of Health, said Wednesday the new round of calls will start next week to about 900 patients who have not developed fungal meningitis but who may be at risk for a localized infection or abscess near the injection site.

Tennessee Continues to See Increase in Fungal Meningitis Cases

Tennessee health officials reported that the number of cases of rare fungal meningitis has increased by five to 49 cases. The number of deaths in Tennessee from the outbreak remained at six as of noon today. At least one person in our region has been diagnosed, according to the Union City Daily Messenger. Six Kentuckians have fallen ill, and one has died. The Kentuckians were infected in Tennessee and Indiana hospitals.
