Some Tennessee lawmakers are considering a push to cut off water and electricity to facilities run by entities like the National Security Agency, which they see as spying unconstitutionally.

A proposal that would dock welfare payments of Tennessee parents whose children fail school is dead.

After a debate on the state Senate floor Thursday, Republican senator and bill sponsor Stacey Campfield decided to pull the bill so it can be studied over the summer.

Both Republicans and Democrats expressed concern about the legislation, which sought to cut Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits by 30 percent if a child fails to advance to the next grade.

Tennessee State Sen. Stacey Campfield calls it "laughable" that a former House candidate is suing him in a $750,000 libel lawsuit.

Roger Byrge is suing Campfield, a Republican, for falsely stating on his blog in the weeks before the 2008 general election that Byrge had a criminal record. Byrge, a Democrat, lost the state House race to Republican Chad Faulkner by fewer than 400 votes.

A Tennessee bill that proposes forcing schools to tell parents if their children have talked to a teacher or counselor about being gay has set the stage for a new fight over social issues in the state legislature. Opponents call the legislation unnecessary and a government intrusion in family matters. State Senator Stacey Campfield’s measure is already drawing attention.
