This is Senior Corps Week. Senior Corps is part of the federal Corporation for National & Community Service. CEO Wendy Spencer said seniors are volunteering at a record rate.

Illinois Seniors Get Bigger Break on Property Tax

Legislation designed to reduce property tax bills for Illinois seniors is now law.

The bill raises the homestead exemption for Illinois residents age 65 and older from $4,000 to $5,000. Gov. Pat Quinn signed it into law Tuesday. The move could save seniors roughly $200 a year.

Tough Times for Low-Income Seniors Hoping to Qualify for Nursing Homes

TennCare officials say it’s getting more difficult for low-income seniors to qualify for nursing homes and other services. Officials say under old rules, elderly people could qualify for up to $55,000 to pay for a nursing home, adult day care or assisted living if they weren’t able to care for themselves. Under rules that began on July 1, TennCare will take an overall assessment of a person’s need before that level of funding is allocated.
