ROMP Bluegrass Festival to Announce Lineup Tomorrow

The 10th ROMP bluegrass music festival in Owensboro is releasing its lineup tomorrow for the June event.

International Bluegrass Music Museum Assistant Director Carly Smith says last year the three-day festival brought in about 21,000 people to hear 27 different acts. The festival is at the same location this year in Yellow Creek Park June 26-28 .

ROMP Music Fest Returns to Owensboro

On Sounds Good, Tracy Ross welcomes ROMP Team member Chris Langdon of the International Bluegrass Music Museum to talk about this year's music festival. Be listening for the fabulous music lineup including The Punch Brothers, Merle Haggard,  Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush, Carolina Chocolate Drops, and many others, at ROMP next Wednesday through Saturday in Owensboro’s Yellow Springs Park. ROMP may move up 2013 dates

Organizers of the annual ROMP bluegrass festival in Owensboro are considering a change in next year's dates.  The festival is usually held during the last weekend in June, but organizers are polling fans to see if they would favor moving it up to the last weekend in May.  International Bluegrass Music Museum executive director Gabrielle Gray says organizers want to keep their audience happy, safe and cooler, if possible.  The proposed 2013 dates for the festival are either May 30th to June 1st or June 27th through the 29th.  Gray says the dates for next year's festival will be announced on

Media Release: WKMS Returns to ROMP Labor Day Weekend

On Labor Day weekend Murray State’s NPR Station, 91.3 WKMS-FM, broadcasts a total of five hours of music from ROMP 2012 in Owensboro, Kentucky, portions of which the station broadcast live in late June from Yellow Springs Park thanks to the International Bluegrass Music Museum which puts on the festival annually.

On Sunday, September 2, WKMS offers a three hour bloc of its Labor Day weekend special concert from 1 to 4 p.m. culminating with headliners Pokey LaFarge and South City Three from 3 to 4 p.m.  The groups Town Mountain and 23 String Band open the show from 1 to 2 p.m. The high-energy Boston-based group The Deadly Gentlemen have the 2 to 3 hour all to themselves.  WKMS pre-empts the regular programs The Jazzman Show at 1 p.m. and American Routes from 2 to 4 p.m. only for this Sunday’s special.

Murray State's listener-supported public radio service 91.3 WKMS-FM presents special live broadcasts from ROMP on Friday and Saturday, June 29 and 30.

Opening the live broadcast Friday at 6 p.m. are The Farewell Drifters, an alt-folk band known for their ‘60s era-inspired harmonies. At 7:20 p.m. Lonesome River Band performs with longtime band member and multi-award winning banjo picker, Sammy Shelor. The Deadly Gentlemen take the stage at 8:40 p.m. performing a blend of epic folk and unconventional bluegrass. Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile headline the night at 10 p.m.   

Saturday at 6 p.m. hear Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three and their creative mix of American roots, western swing, early jazz and country blues. The 23 String Band follows at 7:20 p.m. playing bluegrass fueled by high-octane rock-n-roll. Old Crow Medicine Show headlines at 10 p.m with old-time folk and bluegrass. Other bands may be added to the broadcast schedule in the days leading up to the event.
