A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet official says the public prefers rebuilding the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge in a new location, after a round of public meetings in Cairo, Illinois, and La Center this week.

Spokesperson Keith Todd said the other options KYTC is exploring in its long-range study include rebuilding the bridge at its current site and rehabilitating the current bridge.

Todd attended the Cairo meeting and says most people he spoke with preferred rebuilding the bridge, which he said would be best done near the current structure.

Through a single piece of legislation, Kentucky Junior Senator Rand Paul is hoping to cut a corporate tax and get more revenue for transportation projects.

Highway department officials have set dates for two public meetings this month to discuss options for improving or replacing the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky. and Cairo, Ill.

The first meeting is Monday, May 20 from 4-7 p.m. at Cairo High School. The second meeting is Tuesday, May 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the Ballard Center Community Room in La Center.

The Kentucky House budget committee has approved the next two-year road plan for the commonwealth.

The committee easily passed the plan and the Transportation Cabinet's operating budget today.

The road plan funds many of Governor Steve Beshear's big initiatives, such as widening both Interstate 65 around Bowling Green and the Mountain Parkway.

Bill sponsor Sannie Overly didn't offer specific details about the committee's changes to the measures, but says there are some.
