Former Tennessee Town Clerk Took At Least $2,000 for Personal Use

A West Tennessee town official has been indicted on charges of misappropriating public funds for personal use.

An audit released today by the state Comptroller shows that former Kenton, TN clerk Kelly Ann Greer misappropriated at least $2,000 of utility payments made in cash.

Obion County Preps Incentive Package for Manufacturing Plant

Obion County officials have approved a $3.65 million dollar incentive package in the hopes of attracting an industrial manufacturer.

The money will be loaned to the Union City industrial development board from the county’s hospital fund.

Obion County’s unemployment rate has hovered around 12 percent this year, extending persistent high unemployment since Goodyear closed its Union City Plant in 2011. One woman in the small town of Troy is trying to make a dent in that number while giving new life to her products and a new perspective to her employees.

Boston Architect Designs Soaring Center Building for Discovery Park of America in Union City

Obion County, Tennessee, looks to a fantastic new attraction near Union City to bring many thousands of visitors annually. The Robert E. and Jenny D. Kirkland Foundation is Discovery Park’s principal benefactor. Mr. Kirkland ultimately chose Louis Siriani to be the architect for the 100,000 square foot center of the new 50-acre Discovery Park of America. Since 1984, Siriani's been a principal of the Boston architectural firm Verner Johnson, Inc, which specializes in planning and designing museums which in this country alone draw millions of visitors a year. Mr. Siriani has planned and designed science and technology, history, and multi-disciplinary museums all over the country and the world. He spoke with Kate Lochte about working with Mr. Kirkland and the Union City community for this ambitious project.

Obion County Schools Closed

Obion County, Tenn., schools are closed today and tomorrow due to flu and other illnesses. Assistant Director of School and Student Services Dale Hollowell says 548 students were absent Wednesday, which is about 15 percent of students countywide.

Obion County posted Tennessee's second highest May unemployment rate at 14.2 percent.  Unemployment in Weakley County was also among the state’s highest, at 11.4 percent.

Obion County Commission Approves Local Fire Service Districts

Obion County Tennessee Commissioners will allow three rural communities to provide membership-based fire service to their local customers. The county subscription service ends June 30, because County officials will no longer administer the fee. Clerk Vollie Boehms cites a state statute that prevents her from collecting the fee.  The municipalities of Hornbeak, Samburg and Rives plan to take up the responsibility for fire service in their areas on July 1st. Hornbeak Fire Chief Bob Reavis  says the local city council is expected to approve the new service tonight.

Obion Clerk's Office No Longer Accepting Fire Fees

Obion County Tennessee Clerk Volle Boehms says her office has stopped collecting rural fire subscription fees because she thinks it is illegal. In January the county joined seven communities to establish a countywide fire protection service to residents outside town and city limits.
