KY Treasurer Office May Get Eliminated

Frankfort, KY – A measure to eliminate the office of the Kentucky Treasurer is working its way through the General Assembly again.

Republicans and third party candidates have discussed eliminating the constitutional office for more than four years. GOP Senator Damon Thayer got a constitutional amendment doing so passed out of his chamber in 2008, but the measure later died.

Thayer brought the matter before the Senate State and Local Government committee again today.

Possible Tax Amnesty

Murray, KY – Kentucky officials say a proposed tax amnesty program would generate more than $60 million over the next two years. The amnesty would forgive penalties for thousands of Kentuckians along with forgiveness on half the interest owed the Commonwealth. The Paducah Sun reports State Budget Director Mary Lassiter says it's time to roll out another tax amnesty program, citing the $40 million gained during the last in 2002. The proposal will go before the general assembly next week for approval.

New Constitutional Officers Address Budget Cuts

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's newest constitutional officers are fearing the results of the latest proposed budget cuts.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, Auditor Adam Edelen and Agriculture Commissioner James Comer all testified before a budget subcommittee today. All three are facing 8.4% budget cuts. Grimes and Comer asked the committee to reconsider cuts to their offices to prevent any disruption of public services.

Court Enters Not Guilty Plea on Behalf of Lattus

Hickman, KY – The man charged with murdering Hickman, Kentucky Mayor Charles Murphy remains in jail without bond after the court entered an automatic not guilty plea today on his behalf. Police Chief Tony Grogan says 30-year-old Tommy Lattus walked into a police station early Monday and said he'd shot Murphy, who had dated his adoptive mother. Lattus is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 31. He was assigned a defense lawyer today who has not immediately returned phone calls.

Senator Kirk Recovering From Stroke

Springfield, IL – Neurosurgeon Dr. Richard Fessler says U.S. Senator Mark Kirk is speaking and doing better than doctors expected after emergency surgery following a stroke over the weekend. Fessler says Kirk has some facial paralysis and speaks with a slight slur. He says Kirk appears eager to get back to work, though he is expected to remain in intensive care for several days as swelling goes down in his brain. Doctors say he has a difficult road ahead with regaining movement.
