Bowling Green Resident Survives Costa Concordia Cruise Wreck

Bowling Green, KY – The death toll is now eleven following the capsizing of the Costa Concordia cruise liner off the coast of Italy Friday with at least two dozen still missing.

One of the 42-hundred passengers aboard the ship when it ran aground was 28 year old Lauren Moore of Bowling Green. She was on a vacation with four other friends.

Lauren says she and her friends are fine, at least physically. She says,

School Dropout Age Bill Moves Through Ky General Assembly

Frankfort, KY – One of Governor Steve Beshear's main priorities is once again making its way through Kentucky's General Assembly. A bill sponsored by state Representative Jeff Greer would gradually raise the school dropout age from 16 to 18 by 2017.

The bill has been received very well in the Democratic-controlled House in the past two session. But the state Senate has killed the bill each time, saying it doesn't account for extra expenses or provide alternative means of education.

Giannini to Run for 4th District Seat

Murray, KY – Former Pennyrile District Health Department director Raymond Giannini has decided to run for the 4th District Kentucky House seat. Giannini announced his candidacy yesterday. The seat is currently occupied by Mike Cherry, who has chosen not to run again in 2012. The 4th district encompasses Caldwell, Crittenden, and Livingston counties along with a portion of McCracken. The Paducah Sun reports the only other person who has announced a run for the seat is Marion resident Lynn Bechler.

Beshear Talks Budget Cuts

Frankfort, KY – Governor Steve Beshear has now put a number on the budget cuts he's long said would be painful for the commonwealth. Beshear is cutting Eight point four percent in many state agencies for the next two years.

Public universities are being cut 6.4 percent and state police will take a 2.2 percent cut.In his budget address to the General Assembly last night, Beshear said the cuts are so deep, it could mean layoffs.

Beshear's Budget Not Expected to Be Opposed in the House

Frankfort, KY – House Speaker Greg Stumbo says Governor Steve Beshear can expect his budget proposal to stay mostly intact this session. The governor presented his budget proposal last night, calling for eight point four percent cuts to most state agencies. And while the General Assembly has tinkered with budgets in the past, Stumbo says that isn't likely to happen this time.

University of Pikeville Bill Introduced in House

Frankfort, KY – A bill that would make the University of Pikeville the ninth state university has been filed in the Kentucky House. House Speaker Greg Stumbo and state Representative Leslie Combs announced the filing yesterday. But most of the details of the bill were already known.
