Kentucky Unemployment Down

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's unemployment rate fell to a three year low of 9.1 percent in December. The Office of Employment and Training reports that's down from 9.4 percent in November. The state added 8,400 nonfarm jobs in December. Seven of the eleven major job sectors reported an increase in job numbers. Education and health services and mining and logging both reported losses.

3rd District Representative Housman Will Not Seek Re-Election

Paducah, KY – Kentucky 3rd District Representative Brent Housman will not seek re-election. The Paducah Republican is the third western Kentucky lawmaker to announce such a decision this year. Housman says he wants to spend more time at home with his family. He has a wife and three children, and he is a financial advisor at Hilliard Lyons in Paducah. Currently, no candidates have filed to run for the seat. But Democratic City Commissioner Gerald Watkins tells the Paducah Sun he intends to file to run by the end of the week.

Harmon Files Concealed Carry Bill

Frankfort, KY – Republican State Representative Mike Harmon has filed a bill allowing Kentucky residents to carry concealed firearms without a permit.

The legislation would also prohibit employers from having no-firearms policies that apply to buildings or parking areas. It also prevents them from disciplining employees who have firearms in their vehicles or use them for self-defense.

OVC Basketball Scores

Murray, KY – The Murray State Racers Men's Basketball team maintained their undefeated record last night with a come-from-behind 66 to 60 win over Morehead State last night. The Racers stand at 19 and 0. They will next face off against SIU Edwardsville on the road Saturday night. In other OVC action, S-I-U Edwardsville fell to Drake, 75 to 68. In women's basketball, Western Kentucky beat Tennessee Tech, 71 to 58.

MSU President Speaks Out on Proposed Cuts

Murray, KY – Murray State University President Dr. Randy Dunn is looking for ways to brace for what could be a 3.2 million dollar cut in the school's budget. Governor Steve Beshear's budget plan includes a 6.4% cut to higher education to take effect next fiscal year.

Dr. Dunn hopes to offset some of the cuts by tuition increases, if he's allowed. "Typically the (Kentucky's) Council On Post-Secondary Education sets tuition ceiling given the authority they have, and we can't have that double whammy this year,"Dunn said.
