Rain and cooler temperatures have allowed fire crews to gain the upper hand on wildfires in Kentucky. For the first time in over a month, there are no active forest fires.

Despite over 200 firefighters battling wildland fires in some eight Kentucky counties, the effort is expected to continue into next week.

State Division of Forestry Spokesman Mark Wiedewitsch says large fires in Pike County and the Pine Mountain area are contained.  But, he worries sun and wind could result in more new fires today.  Wiedewitsch says overnight rains helped only so much, “It really wasn’t enough.  To really make a dent in it, we really need a good inch or more.”

Kate Lochte speaks with John Trowbridge, State Command Historian for the Kentucky National Guard, about a fundraising effort to design and construct a Kentucky National Guard Memorial. The memorial will be located at the entrance to Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort. According to their website, the memorial will "create a sacred space for families, friends, and comrades to reflect and remember," as well as provide an educational experience for visitors.
