Choral Conductor Talks Music, Invites Singers to Join New Chorus

For some, singing is a passion. For some it’s a career. For others, it’s something to do in shower, or in the car with the radio full blast. Now Murray has a group devoted to the vocal pursuit. The Murray Choral Society is a new organization dedicated to the study and performance of choral music.

Murray City Council Approves Second Reading of Alcohol Ordinance

Individuals can start applying for packaged liquor licenses in Murray. City Council members passed the second reading of the alcohol ordinance last night in an 8 to 3 vote. Residents voted in July to move from liquor by the drink sales at restaurants to a fully wet city. The ordinance sets an 8 percent regulatory tax for both restaurants and packaged stores. Hours of operation are 6 AM to midnight, and Sunday sales are prohibited.

R. T. Vanderbilt Expands Operations in Murray

Chemical manufacturer R. T. Vanderbilt plans to invest $13.5 million in its Murray plant. The money will go toward new equipment and construction. The company announced today it will also add seven new jobs as part of the project.

Citywide yard sale set for Murray

Next month, bargain hunters from around the region will be able to shop all of Murray during its Fall Citywide Yard Sale. The date for this year's event is set for September 15th.  Those interested in selling items must send in a $10 entry fee to be listed on a map. The fee will go toward the city's July Fourth celebrations.  For out-of-towners or those who don't want to sell from their homes, parking lot spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  You can find more information and this year's application here.

Calloway Co. GOP center opens

The Calloway County Republicans open their party headquarters tonight in Murray, effectively beginning the GOP's local campaign. State Senate Candidate Stan Humphries and 5th District House Candidate Kenny Imes will be on hand to drum up support for their races. The headquarters is at 800 Chestnut Street. The Calloway County Democratic Party will open their headquarters after Labor Day.

Cat Comes Back to Local Dealership

A local Chevrolet & Toyota dealership in Murray has its cat back. Receptionist Emily Bebout says one-year-old Winston was returned to Dwain Taylor Chevrolet and Toyota last week. The company took out an add in the local newspaper early last week asking for help finding the showroom cat.

Murray-Calloway Chamber Among Chamber of the Year Award Recipients

Murray Calloway County's Chamber of Commerce is the best in nation in its category according to the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. Murray-Calloway Chamber beat out the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce in Anderson, South Carolina, for the $500,000 revenue and under category.

Murray Movie Theater Owner Plans No Changes After Colorado Shooting

A Murray movie theater owner said he will not make any changes to his security policies following last night’s deadly shooting in a theater in Aurora, Colo. Cheri Theatres owner and manager John Hopkins said he does not think movie theaters are more vulnerable to gunmen than any other location where shooters have opened fire.

Local Option Election Noon Update; Participate in Our Informal Exit Poll

Calloway County Clerk Ray Coursey says,

“It’s a pretty busy day, now..."

Coursey says it's not exactly 'heavy' yet;  voters don't usually show up in force until after lunch. Coursey says other than voters looking for their polling station and a brief delay to repair a voting machine, no problems have been reported at the polls.
