New Murray State Basketball Ranks

goracers.com

The Ohio Valley Conference Champion Murray State Racers moved up one spot to number 11 in this week’s AP poll, and back one to number 10 in the ESPN rankings. The Racers defeated Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State in the OVC tournament over the weekend to take the championship and secure an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. While sports analysts agree MSU would have received an at-large bid anyway, the win should help the Racers get a higher seed in the tournament. They now await selection Sunday to find out who and where they will play next.

"The Black Experience" An Interview with Dr. Steve Jones

Murray State

A year after the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education, Murray State University welcomed its first African-American students to class. But it wasn’t until 1977 that the school hired its first African-American faculty. Dr. Steve Jones is chair of MSU’s Department of Sociology and teaches a class called "The Black Experience" at Murray.  He was among those the school first hired 35 years ago. Dr. Jones is retiring at the end of this semester, and he sat down with Shelly Baskin to talk about what he experienced during his Murray State tenure.

MSU Downs Tennessee State

The Murray State Racers avenged their only loss of the season last night, defeating the Tennessee State Tigers by 18 points. The Tigers ended Murray State’s bid for perfection earlier this month, upsetting the then number 9-ranked Racers at home. Murray State in turn used last night’s 80-62 win in front of a crowd of more than 10,000 in Nashville to end Tennessee State’s nine game winning streak. The Racers, now 27-1, have one game left at Tennessee Tech Saturday before beginning postseason play at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, where they could face the Tigers for a third time.

MSU Students May be Required to Buy City Sticker

Murray city officials decided to delay a vote yesterday on whether to require students to purchase a city sticker. The city council read the latest version of the resolution, which gives Murray State students a 30 day grace period to buy the sticker. The grace period would be extended to anyone who moves into or begins working in Murray after the June 1 deadline. The sticker would cost a pro-rated amount of 36 dollars for students if purchased between August and May; not having one could incur a 100 dollar fine.

Presidential Lecture: Matalin and Carville

Political Strategists Mary Matalin and James Carville provided insight into the 2012 presidential campaign during Murray State's Presidential Lecture last night. The married couple represented the left and right in their presentation. Matalin, a Republican, made it clear that she hasn't picked her favorite candidate for president. She says it will come down to the nominee's messaging, not the person. Carville did agree with his wife on those points, but he is confident in President Obama's chances at winning re-election.
