'Privatized' was the word Murray State University President Bob Davies repeated in a town hall forum on Friday addressing the budget and tuition.

The landscape of higher education is facing significant business model changes, said Murray State President Bob Davies, pointing to declining state appropriations as well as increased competition for students due to performance funding and other factors.

Like most schools in the region, Murray State University had a wintry start to the Spring semester, but things are kicking into gear despite delays. Murray State University will see a $4.5 million dollar increase in pension obligations if state legislators can’t come up with a plan in a special session expected this fall. That’s according to President Bob Davies in a letter to faculty and staff today on Monday.

Murray State University President Bob Davies kicked off the Friday Board of Regents meeting with the quote, "The hope of democracy depends on the diffusion of knowledge," which is carved above the grand doors of Pogue Library, where the meetings are held.

Kentucky’s public and private colleges and universities awarded a record number of degrees during the 2015-16 academic year.

A report from the Council on Postsecondary Education says Kentucky’s higher education institutions conferred 65,829 degrees--a 2.7 percent increase over the previous year.

With classes already underway, Murray State University President Bob Davies stopped by the WKMS studios to  give an update on leadership staffing changes that occurred over the summer as well as a look forward at future and current construction projects.

The Illinois State University Board of Trustees ​could decide ​​on it's new president at its quarterly meeing  Friday. Murray State President Randy Dunn is among the finalists for the job. The board's ​executive search committee charged with replacing the school’s president met Saturday to review finalist evaluations.

McConnell To Give Murray State Commencement

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell will deliver Murray State's Spring commencement address on May 11th at MSU's CFSB Center.  Around 1,400 Murray State students  are expected to graduate. McConnell’s will be one of two nationally known political figures giving commencement speeches in Kentucky this May. Last week Eastern Kentucky University announced it will host First Lady Michelle Obama.
