Google is coming to Montgomery County, Tennessee. The tech giant is investing $600 million to transform the former Hemlock Semiconductor site into a data center, creating 70 jobs.

Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan says Google wants to be a partner in the community’s growth. City and county officials will work with the company to launch a community grants program to support science and technology education, carbon reduction, and internet access.

A tech giant may be moving into Clarksville, Tennessee. The Tennessean reports  Google plans to invest $500 million dollars to a build a data center at the old Hemlock Semiconductor site, creating 70 full-time positions.

Hemlock Semiconductor is closing its Clarksville plant in Tennessee due to industry oversupply and international trade disputes. The plant’s approximately 50 workers will have the opportunity to relocate to other company or Dow Corning sites.

Republicans picked up a few more seats in the state legislature. Knoxville teacher and Democratic state Rep. Gloria Johnson fell to challenger Eddie Smith, who got big help from the state’s Republican Party.

Democrat John Tidwell of New Johnsonville was defeated by his Republican opponent – Jay Reedy, a farmer and veteran. The district includes Houston, Humphreys and part of Montgomery County.

The Army has analyzed the impact of cutting 16,000 personnel from Fort Campbell, which would be about half of its current population.

Clarksville, Tenn., police have charged a 23-year-old man with shooting his 15-year-old brother in the head and killing him. Brian Holden Smith is being held without bond at the Montgomery County jail.

The Montgomery County, Tennessee school system is no longer requesting student Social Security numbers.  The shift comes months after hackers exposed the personal data of about 4300 current and former students along with the private information of about 4900 current and former employees.  In many of those cases, the data included social security numbers.  School system spokeswoman Elise Shelton says the school system will generate its own identification numbers for students, using the same system as Clarksville-Montgomery County schools.  Shelton says the school system began notifying affe
