Low Mississippi River water hampers port work

Low water in the Mississippi River is delaying work on a new west Tennessee river port.  Cates Landing construction site project manager Michael Sanders says the low levels are delaying placement of rock, completion of piers at the site, dredging operations and work on the walkways, lighting, power and other site work.

Wickliffe and Columbus, Kentucky, are among cities from ten states partnering to build a Mississippi River legislative platform. The Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative includes mayors from 41 communities.

Wickliffe Among Towns Involved in New River Initiative

A representative from the city of Wickliffe is among Mississippi River town leaders meeting this week to discuss federal lobbying efforts. The newly-formed Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative is meeting in St. Louis to talk about water quality, floodplains, and recreational and environmental protection.

Mississippi River Bridge to Close for Inspection

The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to close the U.S. 60/62 bridge over the Mississippi River three days next week for safety inspections. The bridge which connects Cairo, Ill., to Mississippi County Missouri will shut down between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.

American Queen Stranded Due to Lower Water

The ongoing drought has left the American Queen steamboat docked in Memphis, unable to paddle on down the Mississippi River because of low water. The steamboat stopped in Paducah this week on its journey down river.

Flooding May Not affect Northwest Tennessee Port

Project executives with the Cates Landing port on the Mississippi River in northwest Tennessee are optimistic that spring flooding will not affect construction.  Work on the multimillion-dollar Lake County riverport has been ongoing since 1999.
