Opponents of a bill seeking to attract horse slaughter facilities to Tennessee hope the measure finally meets its demise in the General Assembly. The Senate version of the bill was taken off notice last week, though the sponsor says he will revive the measure if the House approves the companion bill. The lower chamber was scheduled to take up its version of Representative Andy Holt’s bill Monday evening.
The Tennessee House has delayed a vote on a bill giving the state's education commissioner the power to waive state laws to grant public schools more flexibility. Republican Representative Art Swann says his bill is designed to emulate the leeway granted to charter schools, but he agreed to put the measure on hold after members of both parties raised concerns over a provision giving an unelected official the ability to ignore statutes enacted by the Legislature.
Tennessee House Democrats say the Republican majority is moving too quickly through the legislative process. Toward the end of the House floor session Monday, Democratic Representative Jimmy Naifeh took exception to a Republican move to end debate on overhauling a judicial disciplinary panel. Naifeh says the measure is a complex change, and lawmakers were unable to receive any details before the vote took place. Republican Representative Curry Todd made the motion to head straight for a vote. He says the final vote of 86-7 in favor of the bill showed no debate was necessary. House Demo
