Madisonville is instituting a 3 percent restaurant tax beginning January 1.

The city council approved the measure Monday night by a 4-2 margin. The revenue generated from the tax will be transferred to the Hopkins County Tourist and Convention Commission to promote the area in an effort to spark economic development.

Madisonville May Re-Legalize Beekeeping

Beekeeping in Madisonville may no longer be illegal, thanks to a proposed city ordinance that passed its first reading Monday.

Councilman Mark LeeĀ sponsored the ordinance and says bees are an important part of the local ecology and hopes, if passed, the ordinance would slowly reintroduce private operations in the city.

The Madisonville City Council has a new Ward 2 councilman. Madisonvilleā€™s Customer Service Director Leslie Curneal says longtime banker Tom Morgan was named to the position after a 4-1 vote yesterday Thursday. The council nominated two candidates, Morgan and C.D. Palmer.
