Abandoned Animals Problem for Public Lands

A 10-foot albino python discovered in Land Between the Lakes Wednesday is the latest in the growing problem abandoned pets pose to public parks. LBL's Denise Scmittou says abandoned animals are a burden to LBL staff who must capture the animals and find a suitable shelter. Abandonment is also hard on the animals, who often lack the skills to survive in the wild. She says people unable to take care of their animals have plenty of options other than abandonment.

Journey Story: Donnie Holland

My family settled Between the Rivers in the 1790’s, and left in July 1968.  My grandparents on each side of the family lost their homes twice to government projects. I was attending Murray State and still living with my parents when our home was taken by force,  bulldozed and buried.  My grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins homes were all taken, pits were bulldozed near the homes and all outbuildings and all signs of humanity pushed into the holes and buried as if they  had never existed.  The church my great grandfather helped found, was buried in a pit.

Forest Service Payments

Projects to improve roads and forest trails in rural Kentucky counties are facing their last round of funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agency announced Friday that more than $307 million will be distributed to states with national forest lands, marking the final payment under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act. Kentucky, which is home to Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest, will get a final check for $1.8 million.

Beshear Considers Ferry Service

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says state officials are aggressively searching for options to accommodate traffic at the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge.  The Governor says he expects inspection reports to be ready within the next couple of weeks to help clearly layout a timeline for whichever options are deemed best. He says though, at this point, it looks like one of the quickest options may be establishing a ferry service at the site:
