U.S. Forest Service officials will hold a public listening session later this month to hear ideas and concerns about the management of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.

United States Forest Service officials toured Land Between the Lakes with Southern Illinois University forestry students Thursday, discussing some of the land management projects that have recently stirred up controversy.

The production explores the history and mystery of western Kentucky’s early 19th century iron industry and how one of the men behind it, William Kelly, developed the process of refining iron into steel that kickstarted America’s rise to industrial might.

However, there is much controversy surrounding Kelly’s invention and whether industrial espionage took it to Great Britain to begin the steel revolution there.

The Homeplace 1850's Farm at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area hosts a day dedicated to working with wool Saturday from 10 to 4, and on Sounds Good, Kate Lochte learns about all the hands-on activities, including "shearing" from Lead Interpreter Cindy Earls.

U.S. Congress

Kentucky Congressman Ed Whitfield met with county and Forest Service officials today to discuss the ongoing logging controversy at Land Between the Lakes. Last Tuesday the Forest Service announced plans to temporarily halt timber harvest sales and to modify existing logging contracts in the area after 3 months of public opposition to the land management technique.
