The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that part of the Old Ledbetter Bridge over the Tennessee River collapsed early this morning.
Kentucky State Police contacted KYTC engineers with word that the two land-based piers at the west end of the structure and the 3 approach spans supported on the McCracken County side of the river had dropped to the ground around 2:10 AM Sunday.
The damage occurred to a compression member of the structure. Had the damage been to a tension member of the structure it could have caused a failure of the span similar to the May 23, 2013 collapse of the Skagit River Bridge near Burlington, Washington.
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has sent the General Assembly the Recommended Highway Plan that if enacted would give nearly $7 billion of state and federal funding to road projects across the Commonwealth.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is restricting traffic on the Cumberland River Bridge at Lake City next Monday to allow a bridge inspection.
Expect one-lane traffic from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Inspectors will attempt to complete their work before the afternoon commute since the bridge is an alternate route to the I-24 work zone. KYTC expects the inspection to take three to four days.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is studying options for improving or replacing the aging Cairo Bridge that connects Wickliffe, Ky., and Cairo, Ill. The bridge carries about 5,400 vehicles daily across the Ohio River. The 76-year-old bridge is considered “functionally obsolete” because it doesn’t meet modern traffic standards.
The nearest alternate upstream river crossing is the Ohio River Bridge in Paducah, and it requires a 2-hour detour. Downstream, it’s the Dorena-Hickman Ferry and the Mississippi River Bridge.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close KY 464/Almo-Shiloh Road at the Clarks River Bridge in Calloway County during daylight hours starting Wednesday.
This closure at KY 464 mile point 13.190 is to allow a long-reach track hoe to remove drift and debris from beneath the Clarks River Bridge in the Almo Community. To facilitate this work the roadway will be closed to all through traffic at the site.
The Ledbetter Bridge is reopening to two-lane traffic for the Thanksgiving holiday. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet had reduced the bridge to one lane traffic last week for concrete deck repairs. That work is on hold over the holiday, though a three-ton load limit remains in effect.
