I-24: Road Crews Making Progress, Working to Clear Ice Before Dark

Update 3:30 pm

Road crews are hard at work to clear as much snow and ice from area Interstate 24 and other area highways before dusk, when cold temperatures pose a chance for potential re-freezing.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says crews are confident to have both directions of I-24 mostly clear by tonight.

I-24: All Lanes Open, Traffic Moving After 14-Hour Closure

Update 9:02pm

Westbound traffic on I-24 is now moving, eastbound still blocked by stalled semi. 

KYTC is reporting traffic backups on I-24 near exit 54 in Caldwell County. 

Two semi trucks running normal interstate speed attempted to exit into snow covered ramps and jackknifed. Road crews are working to clear the site as quickly as possible. 

KYTC urges all motorists to avoid unnecessary overnight travel and to be mindful of potential re-freezing due to extreme cold temperatures. 

Update: 3:49pm 

All eastbound and westbound lanes of I-24 are now open, but Kentucky road crews are still battling traffic obstructions.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says road conditions are still pretty rough, but traffic is now moving in both directions after coming to a standstill last night, stranding many travelers.

Eggners Ferry Bridge - Closed Monday Night (Dec 29)

UPDATE: Monday (12/29/14) - The Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake will be closed tonight from 9 PM to 5 AM Tuesday morning. 

The closure is to allow contractors to place concrete for Pier #8 as part of construction of the New Eggners Ferry Bridge.

KYTC and KSP Combat Copper Wire Theft on State Highways

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Kentucky State Police have joined forces to combat the rising number of copper wire thefts from highway lights.

The KSP are offering up to $2,500 for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. These incidents have cost taxpayers at least $2,000,000 in just the last four years. 

KYTC Spokesman Keith Todd says there’s more to the issue than just money.

KYTC Contractors Progress on New Kentucky Lake Bridge Project

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says foundation work on the New Eggners Ferry Bridge will begin soon.

Last week, Johnson Brothers Construction notified the US Coast Guard that it's placing a construction flotilla on the water to start work on a pier near the east side of Kentucky Lake.

Progress on Ledbetter Bridge Demolition

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is continuing to make progress on the demolition of the Old Ledbetter Bridge. The contractor has removed all the concrete decking from the 3 truss spans and has started removing decking on the eastern approach spans at the Livingston County end of the 85 year old structure.

The contractor submitted a demolition plan to the US Coast Guard for approval about a month ago.  The Coast Guard shared the plan with a river industry trade group and federal agencies for their input.   This week the US

Old Ledbetter Bridge Partially Collapses, KYTC to Conduct Investigation

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that part of the Old Ledbetter Bridge over the Tennessee River collapsed early this morning. 

Kentucky State Police contacted KYTC engineers with word that the two land-based piers at the west end of the structure and the 3 approach spans supported on the McCracken County side of the river had dropped to the ground around 2:10 AM Sunday.
