Kentucky State Police say a serious crime took place every two minutes and 38 seconds in 2011. The agency's annual Crime in Kentucky report released this month shows more than 290,000 arrests were made last year.

Crown Vic No Longer Cruiser of Choice for Police

Kentucky State Police purchased 125 Chevy Caprices to replace the Ford Crown Victoria as the state’s cruiser. KSP Trooper Michael Webb says Ford stopped making the popular Crown Vic in 2010 and some of the agency's oldest vehicles were starting to get worn out.

“When you are operating a car at that speed it needs to be in top condition.  When troopers are crossing medians and driving on gravel roads in rural communities…just doing the nature of police work it’s hard on the vehicle’s frame, components, and the structure of the car.”

Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a Nashville man suspected of killing his wife yesterday.  The KSP in McCracken County were looking for a Mercedes involved in a hit and run around noon on I-24.  

New Test for Kentucky Motorcyclists

Kentuckians wanting a motorcycle operator's license will face a new rider skills test starting this week. The Kentucky State Police Driver Testing Branch will start using the new test tomorrow which was developed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. It's designed to better determine if operators possess sufficient safety skills for riding motorcycles in traffic. The new test expands Kentucky's current motorcycle skill test from two to four exercises. The changes apply to both two-wheel and three-wheel motorcycle tests.

McCracken County Inmate Missing from Work Detail

Police are looking for a McCracken County jail inmate held on theft and drug charges after he escaped from a work detail yesterday.  Kentucky State Police say 20-year-old William C. Murrell was last seen just after two Tuesday afternoon at his work detail in Paducah. He's believed to have left the area on foot.  Police say his green jail jumpsuit was found nearby, and officers are unable to give a current clothing description.  Murrell is described as black, 5-foot-10 and 152 pounds.  Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact state police.

With a 69% spike in motorcycle accidents so far this year, Kentucky State Police are turning to social media to counter the problem.  KSP spokesman Trooper Michael Webb says the agency is launching a weeklong campaign urging both motorcyclists and drivers to be careful. He says,

“Our message for motorcycle safety is simply to be more proactive and vigilant in the upcoming months. Summer is closely upon us and we know that more motorcyclists will be on the roadway during that time.”

Burns arrested after fleeing IN

28 year old Tavon Burns of Evansville, Indiana was arrested last weekend in Hopkins County. Kentucky State Police stopped Burns without incident on the Pennyrile Parkway near White Plains. Burns was wanted for allegedly stabbing three people in Evansville last week. He is being held in Hopkins County Jail without bond.

Kentucky State Police posts across the commonwealth are accepting donations of nonperishable food and cleaning supplies for storm victims. Collection begins today at all KSP posts and will continue through the weekend. The agency says only food, cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, bedding and the like should be brought to police posts. Monetary donations should be made to service organizations, such as the Red Cross.

A Madisonville church maintenance worker charged with 300 counts of possession of child pornography is in jail on a $10,000 dollar bond. Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant at 25-year-old Martin Clouse’s home Wednesday night. Police say the warrant was part of an investigation of online child pornography sharing that began in November. Pastor John Thomas of Christ the King Church, where Clouse was employed, says Clouse rarely had contact with children at the church. He also says they perform background checks on employees and attend training to protect children in the church.
