The Secretary of Kentucky’s Justice and Public Safety Cabinet says he’s thrilled with the impact of the state’s needle exchange programs.

Kentucky Department of Corrections Commissioner Rodney Ballard has resigned after a little more than a year on the job. A statement from Justice and Public Safety Cabinet spokesman Mike Wynn said Ballard resigned to “pursue a private sector venture.”

  A decision not to renew a contract with a Marion County prison means Kentucky  inmates will no longer be housed in private facilities. The state is ending contracts with two facilities in eastern and central Kentucky.
