This Saturday night, Travis Stone will make his debut as the new track announcer at Churchill Downs.

A week later, he’ll call the biggest race in sport—the Kentucky Derby—before a crowd of more than 150,000 people.

Stone is just the eighth person in the track’s long history to hold the job, and at age 30, is also the youngest.

Travis Stone is the new Churchill Downs announcer and will be the voice of the Kentucky Derby next year, the track said today. 

Stone succeeds Larry Collmus, who left after a little under a year to call races at New York Races. 

He becomes the eighth announcer at the historic track.

On Saturday, the winner of the Kentucky Derby will be presented with a beautifully-ornate wreath of roses traditionally known as the Garland of Roses. For the last 28 years, the Garland project has been constructed by a team of florists at the Kroger Company, and Carol Besler has been there for every one of those 28 years.

The official drink of tomorrow’s Kentucky Derby is the Kentucky Mint Julep, a drink that includes muddled mint leaves, sugar, ice and about two shots of bourbon served in the glass of your choice, but it’s supposed to be consumed from a silver or pewter cup. It’s a safe assumption that thousands of people will consume a variation of this drink tomorrow.

Larry Collmus will be the new race caller at Churchill Downs starting on April 26.

Among Collmus' duties will be announcing the Kentucky Derby on May 3. He becomes the seventh announcer at the historic track.

Churchill Downs is installing a video board bigger than three basketball courts to make sure everyone attending the Kentucky Derby can actually see the horse race.

The Louisville track say the more than 15,000-square-foot video board will be installed early next year — well ahead of the Run for the Roses. The $12 million dollar project is the latest upgrade at the famed track.
