State regulators have told an Eastern Kentucky coal mine to immediately cease operations after a pond overflow released iron-laced water into a stream last week and killed hundreds of fish.

  Muzzleloader season starts this weekend for Kentucky deer hunters. While this organic meat offers food for families, the inedible parts are often left where they shouldn’t be. Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Captain Garry Clark says deer dumping is always a problem this time of year.

  The Humane Society is calling on Governor Steve Beshear to immediately stop the state’s black bear hunt, after the quota during the first archery portion of the season was exceeded.

  Kentucky’s Bow Season for deer is underway and represents  just one aspect of a $770 million dollar industry for the state.  Richard Aiken is an Economist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife’s National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation. Aiken reports of the 347,000 hunters in the state,  301,000 of them hunt for deer, where the other majority hunt for Turkey.

Search and rescue crews found the body of a missing Sacramento, Kentucky woman in Lake Barkley last night after an extensive search. The woman was reported missing at 3:30 pm to the Lyon County Dispatch.

A legislative committee has ordered a review of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, one of the latest signs of a heightened vigilance of the agency's operations by lawmakers.

Sen. Christian McDaniel, co-chairman of the Program Review and Investigations Committee, said lawmakers are expected to be briefed on the status of that review during a meeting Thursday.

Hunters killed 92 sandhill cranes in Kentucky's second hunting season for the bird. That's 42 more than last season.
