For more than a decade, Kentucky’s largest business association has hosted a state legislative preview conference. Tuesday’s event in Lexington covered most hot button items for the 2018 general assembly session.

Businesses in Kentucky will struggle in moving forward with a pro-growth, job creating agenda unless the state pension issue is resolved. That’s according to Kentucky Chamber President Dave Adkisson.

He told the Paducah Chamber Thursday that the pension problem and tax reform are their top priorities for the 2018 General Assembly.

A renewed effort to get people to quit smoking in Kentucky is launching Wednesday in Frankfort. Led by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky and Baptist Health, at the top of the coalition’s to-do list is to raise the cigarette tax to $1.60 a pack. That’s a $1 increase over the current rate.

With the first three months of lobbyist reports in for this year’s legislative session, it looks like total spending will easily surpass the previous record.

According to the Kentucky Legislative Ethics Commission, business, organizations and legislative agents spent $7.5 million lobbying lawmakers in the first quarter of this year.
