Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson Resigns For White House Post; Crit Luallen to Replace Him

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson will resign on Nov. 13 for a post in the White House, and former state Auditor Crit Luallen will be appointed in his place, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Thursday.

Abramson will be President Obama's liaison to state and local government, the Associated Press reports.

Lt Gov Abramson Invites Livingston County Students to 'Close the Deal' on Higher Ed

Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson is encouraging more Livingston County High School students to pursue higher education.

The statewide program, “Close the Deal” is in its third year and supports high school counselors, business and postsecondary communities in helping students attain further education past high school. 

Livingston and three other Kentucky school districts were invited to participate in the program this year.

Beshear's Tax Reform Proposal in House Budget Committee Today, A Behind-The-Scenes Look

Lt. Gov Jerry Abramson presented a draft of Governor Steve Beshear's proposed tax code changes to the House budget committee today, which was first announced by Beshear last week. The changes, if fully implemented, could raise an estimated $210 million annually by expanding the 6% sales tax to select services, an increased tax on cigarettes from 60 cents to $1 dollar per pack, and reducing tax breaks on pensions for people earning more than $80,000. MSU College of Business Presents Conference on "The Future of West Kentucky"

MSU's Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business presents an economic development conference next Tuesday, December 10 in the Curris Center. Beshear, Abramson Won't Attend Fancy Farm Picnic

Gov. Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson will skip next week's Fancy Farm Picnic in Graves County. Democratic Party Chairman Dan Logsdon said they're unable to go.

Last year, Abramson received criticism for questioning the relevancy of the political event.

KY Lt. Gov. Not Ready to Announce Plans for 2015 Gov. Race

Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson says he may announce his intentions regarding a run for Governor before or shortly after the August 3rd Fancy Farm Picnic. Jerry Abramson has served as Kentucky’s Lieutenant Governor since 2012 and previously served as Louisville Mayor for 21 years.

Abramson is one of a number of democrats discussing a run for the office including term limited Attorney General Jack Conway and former State Auditor Crit Luallen.

Abramson said current polls show he could win a race for Governor, but he’s undecided on whether or not to run.

House Speaker Hears Only Silence Over Proposed Tax Reforms

In just over a month, lawmakers are back in Frankfort for a special session on new boundaries for Kentucky’s legislative districts.  But, there are no plans yet to resolve another issue facing the state.

It’s often called real tax reform or comprehensive tax reform. And it’s been on Frankfort’s radar screen for years. Despite numerous proposals, no substantial change in tax policy has come under serious consideration at the statehouse. Gov. Beshear says Kentucky needs a ‘modern tax system’ responsive to a 21st century economy.  But, he admits, politicians would rather avoid the topic.

Lawmakers Ready for Tax Reform Legislation, but Bill Unlikely This Session

Kentucky lawmakers seemed eager to dig into another tax reform bill this year, but the chair of the latest tax reform commission says reform isn't likely coming soon.

Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson—who chaired the commission—and Mary Lassiter, the secretary of the cabinet, addressed lawmakers on the budget committees about the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Tax Commission.

Tax Reform Commission Issues Report

Kentucky’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Tax Reform has proposed lowering individual and corporate tax rates, raising the cigarette tax and extending the state sales tax to certain services. Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson says the changes recommended by the group would generate about $659 million in new state revenue each year. Abramson headed the commission and says the changes will make Kentucky more competitive in creating jobs.
