The City of Murray has seen an increase in panhandling over the last few years, which has the city council looking for ways to control it. After discussing public comments on Murray’s panhandlers at last month's city council meeting, Mayor Jack Rose charged the city attorney with drafting an ordinance that would make begging illegal. Thursday night the city council will get an update from the city attorney on the possible ordinance.

The Murray City Council will soon consider a draft ordinance discouraging begging or panhandling in the city.

Mayor Jack Rose instructed city attorney Warren Hopkins at Thursday night’s meeting to draft the ordinance,  after examples from the cities of Paducah, Hopkinsville and Bowling Green were presented to the council.

A former director of finance for the city of Murray will take on the same role in an interim capacity following Alan Lanier's resignation last week.

Don Leet served as finance director from 1990 to 2007 under four different mayors. Leet retired only last month from his position as finance officer at Murray engineering firm Bacon Farmer Workman. Mayor Jack Rose, accounting manager Kim Wyatt and human resources director Cathy Morris are handling the job’s duties until Leet’s retirement paperwork is sorted out in Frankfort.

City of Murray director of finance Alan Lanier resigned Thursday, Mayor Jack Rose confirms.

Lanier's resignation was effective immediately. Rose held a meeting Thursday with the city's finance department to address the finance director’s duties while the job is vacant. Rose says he, human resources director Cathy Morris and accounting manager Kim Wyatt will share the workload for the time being.

Murray city leaders will break ground Thursday on a $61 million wastewater treatment plant expansion.

Upgrades at the Bee Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will cause city water and wastewater bills to double over the next three years, but Mayor Jack Rose says the expansion is necessary to bring the plant up to Environmental Protection Agency and Kentucky Division of Water standards.

The city of Murray and Calloway County have moved closer to a new deal to make the Murray-Calloway County Hospital's paramedics the primary provider of extrication services in the event of a vehicle accident within or outside the city.

Thursday night, the City Council approved 8-4 the transferring of the Murray Fire Department’s rescue and vehicle extrication equipment to the Hospital’s EMS unit.

Tomorrow night, a resolution to approve a new deal between the city of Murray and Calloway County over emergency extrication services goes before the city council.

Murray city administrator Matt Mattingly's position is being eliminated from city operations as recently-elected mayor Jack Rose takes on many of the job's responsibilities himself.
