Hopkins County Interchange Nears Completion

Oct 24, 2014

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet engineers report work on the new full-flow interchange connecting Interstate 69 with the Breathitt-Pennyrile Parkway in Hopkins County is about 60 percent complete. The interchange is one of about 10 major construction projects expanding the footprint of I-69 through Kentucky.

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear announced Thursday  a contract for improvements to bring a portion of the Julian M. Carroll Purchase Parkway up to interstate highway standards and an eventual designation as Interstate 69.

The project involves reconstruction of 30 miles of the parkway from Exit 22 (mile point 22) in Graves County to U.S. 62 at Calvert City (mile point 52) in Marshall County. Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. was awarded the contract on a low bid of $8.08 million. The project has a completion date of Sept. 15, 2015.

The Edward T. Breathitt Pennyrile Parkway might be getting a new designation, as the Interstate 69 project gains momentum.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is currently conducting a study to determine whether the southern portion of the parkway could possibly receive Interstate status. A similar study has already been conducted on the northern portion, which is now considered a future I-69 corridor.
