The Illinois Department of Transportation has discontinued the Interstate 66 Corridor Study aimed at connecting Paducah to East Cape Girardeau, Ill.

An IDOT statement claims the study was scrapped because of a lack of participation from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Intense road work along the I-24 Ohio River Bridge is expected to cause heavy traffic delays throughout the week.

The US 60/US 62 Mississippi River Bridge between Missouri and Illinois south of Cairo will be closed to traffic for one week for scheduled inspections.

Highway department officials have set dates for two public meetings this month to discuss options for improving or replacing the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge between Wickliffe, Ky. and Cairo, Ill.

The first meeting is Monday, May 20 from 4-7 p.m. at Cairo High School. The second meeting is Tuesday, May 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the Ballard Center Community Room in La Center.


The former assistant secretary at the Illinois Department of Transportation says a report on improper hiring at the agency mischaracterizes what he told investigators.

Former congressman David Phelps disputed a report the Office of Executive Inspector General released Monday. The report says Phelps did "little work" and mostly engaged in "misconduct and abuse." Phelps says he told investigators he answered requests for information from job-seekers but did nothing improper.

Illinois could have $275 million more for road and bridge projects this year if lawmakers approve a Department of Transportation funding plan. DOT officials have found $400 million mostly in extra federal and free-up state money to pump into the transit improvement program over the next five years. One lawmaker says the DOT wants immediate legislative approval so work can begin when the weather warms up. If the legislation passes it would be a 15 percent increase from the almost $1.8 billion dollars the DOT said it would spend in the fiscal year ending June 30.

Mississippi River Bridge to Close for Inspection

The Illinois Department of Transportation plans to close the U.S. 60/62 bridge over the Mississippi River three days next week for safety inspections. The bridge which connects Cairo, Ill., to Mississippi County Missouri will shut down between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday.
