Hurricane Isaac

Within hours of Superstorm Sandy slamming the East Coast two years ago, Americans opened their wallets to help — donating millions to the first charity that came to mind: the American Red Cross.

President Obama, like most elected officials and celebrities, vouched for the organization, encouraging people to give.

National Weather Service officials say remnants of former Hurricane Isaac will bring gusty winds and rain to the region this weekend. Forecaster David Humprhey says heavy rain will be the biggest effect of the storms, with 2-3 inches expected between now and Sunday. But high winds are also a concern. Humphrey says NWS has issued a lake wind advisory today through Sunday.

Western Kentucky Red Cross chapters have deployed seven volunteers to help with Hurricane Isaac Storm clean up. Paducah Area Red Cross Director Jessica Toren says the volunteers from four chapters have deployed to locations in Florida, Texas, Alabama and Louisiana, and more volunteers are on standby.

Kentucky Utilities Sending Crews to Help with Isaac Damage

Kentucky Utilities and Louisville Gas and Electric have answered the call to help with restoration efforts following Hurricane Isaac. KU spokesman Cliff Feltham,

“What we have decided to do is send roughly two hundred of our…a combination of employees and our contractor crews south to be deployed wherever they are needed, and they left early this morning.”

Feltham says the crews will report to a staging area in either South Tennessee or North Mississippi, and will fan out from there.  He believes their first assignment will be in the Baton Rouge area.

The former Hurricane Isaac is due to reach the region sometime tomorrow afternoon, much weaker than when it hit Louisiana yesterday. National Weather Service forecaster David Humphrey says the storm will probably skirt the outside of the Four Rivers Region.

“The track still looks like it’s gonna come up out of Louisiana, go through Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana. That’ll take the very heaviest rain, along that track”
