PCM Begins Construction on New Homeless Shelter

Paducah Cooperative Ministry has begun construction on their new homeless shelter on North 12th Street in Paducah.

The new shelter will have six housing units and an administrative building.

Fed Awards $19M Housing Grant for Kentucky's Homeless

More than $19 million has been awarded to help homeless housing and service programs in Kentucky.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced the grants this week. 
The funds will help with services such as street outreach, client assessment and direct housing assistance.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and is a time to reflect on good fortune, friends and family. Some good fortunes can be taken for granted: a roof over your head, food in the refrigerator, a job that pays a fair wage. The Gentry House in Murray helps homeless families with children who may have suffered from domestic violence or lost jobs. It's a transitional shelter where people can stay for up to 90 days. During this time, they'll get help finding a job, pursuing educational routes and permanent housing.

On Sounds Good, we speak with Gentry House director Kim Mason, and the president of its board of directors, Dr. Robert Lyons of Murray State's College of Education and Health Services.

Murray City Council Mulls Approaches to Keeping Gentry House Open

The Murray City Council is asking the board of a non-profit that provides homeless housing to rescind its decision to close at the end of January.

The Gentry House, which houses four homeless families, decided to close last year due to lack of funding and staffing difficulties - four executive directors in six years.

Kentucky Homeless Veterans on the Rise

New data shows that the number of homeless veterans in Kentucky is on the rise. The increase is partly a result of troop drawdowns in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Beginning in 2009, troops serving in Middle East began redeploying home in large numbers. The number of those having trouble finding work or a place to live increased along with it.

New Federal Regulations Expose Issues in Ky. Homeless Shelters

Kentucky’s rural homeless shelters are finding it difficult to coordinate their services as new federal regulations take effect.

The HEARTH Act was passed in 2009, and its regulations for how homeless shelters and transitional housing programs work together are slowly being implemented.
