Noise-inducing hearing loss is a serious health threat to Navy personnel, that costs the Department of Veterans Affairs over $100 million dollars each year. Dr. Gary Morris, chair of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health in the Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology at Murray State University researches hearing loss in the Navy with his students and joins Kate Lochte on Sounds Good to talk about his work as part of our Racer Scholar Profiles series, which highlights MSU faculty research, scholarly and creative activities across colleges and schools.

The US Coast Guard will begin a formal hearing today to hear testimony regarding the collision between a cargo ship and the Eggner’s Ferry Bridge in late January. January 26th, the cargo ship Delta Mariner struck the span crossing Kentucky Lake causing portions to collapse. There were no deaths or injuries. Coast Guard officials say the purpose of the investigation is to examine the causes of the incident and make recommendations to help avoid similar incidents. It is not intended to determine civil or criminal responsibility.

Charter School Hearing

After several years, a bill allowing charter schools in Kentucky has received a hearing in a House committee.

Advocates for and against the measure spent this morning debating the merits of the education reform in the capitol. Charter school administrators from other states joined Rep. Brad Montell, the bill's sponsor, and Kentucky Chamber of Commerce president Dave Adkission in support of the bill.
