It's all about testing, cooking and eating ham in Cadiz this weekend. The Trigg County Ham Festival also features a carnival and petting zoo for kids, Janice Mason Art Museum's Quilt Show, country music concerts, and non-profits raising money for their activities. Festival booth chair and WKDZ/WHVO business office manager Melissa Noel tells Kate Lochte about some of the more than 200 booths planned, on Sounds Good.

Ronnie Drennan rubbed some salt and sugar into a ham about nine months ago and knew this was the start of something good.

He didn't know it was $2 million worth of good. That's the price tag his country ham snared Thursday morning in an auction at the Kentucky State Fair.

The auction of the state's "grand champion" ham is an annual tradition and the money goes to the charity of the winning bidder's choice. This year, the 16-pound piece of pork went to a group including owners of Louisville's Hermitage Farms, Bridgeman Foods and Republic Bank.

Kate Lochte speaks with Dr. Gregg Rentfrow of the UK Extension Faculty about how to judge country hams. The 37th Annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival takes place this weekend and many people are bringing hams for judging. Dr. Rentfrow talks about the criteria: confirmation, which is the overall shape of the ham, how plump it is, and whether it has a pleasing shape - like a classic teardrop; workmanship, the ability to clean the ham up - extra curing, mold (yes, mold! he explains this), etc.; and color and aroma! WKDZ's Melissa Noel has the scoop on this weekend's 37th Annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival. UK Extension event organizers who started the Festival said they had to choose between hams and moonshine in celebrating a local product and they thought they ought to go with hams. Kate Lochte speaks with Melissa about the Trigg County tradition and this year's events, October 11 - 12 in downtown Cadiz. See more at hamfestival.com.

The Kentucky State Fair grand champion country ham fetched $300,000 at a charity auction Thursday. Since 1964, the top ham has been auctioned at the close of the Kentucky Farm Bureau country ham breakfast. This year’s top bidder was Louisville optometrist Dr. Mark Lynn.
