Severe Weather Sweeps Through Western KY and Southern IL

Communities throughout western Kentucky and southern Illinois are contending with high water, hail damage, and downed trees this morning following severe storms that passed through our region last night. 

Residents in Beulah in Hopkins County reported a large funnel cloud at about 7:30 p.m., and a large wedge-shaped tornado close to a mile wide was reported in Christian an hour later.  Winds of up to 70 miles an hour were recorded near Elkton in Todd County.

Damage Reports are coming in following a line of storms in far western Kentucky that continue to move east through our region. Police in Crittenden County say there have been a few reports of trees down across a few roads, but nothing severe at this point. There is a storm shelter open at the Crittenden County Courthouse. In Hopkins County officials say they’ve had no reports of damage thus far. A shelter is open at that courthouse as well. Officials in Ballard County say strong winds ripped the roof off of a trailer in LaCentre. And there are also some reports of trees down..

A flash flood warning remains in effect for much of the WKMS listening area through 3:45 this afternoon. A tornado watch is in effect for portions of northwest Tennessee through 5:30 this evening. In Illinois, just north of our broadcast area, Saline County experienced severe damage. Officials confirm six people were killed in the storms. In Kentucky, authorities say power lines are down in Ballard County with no reports of injuries. McCracken County officials say a mobile home was destroyed near Ogden Landing road.  Five people inside were injured, one seriously.
