The Graves County School district is challenging a decision this week by the Mayfield City Council to annex some of the district’s property. Mayfield Mayor Teresa Rochetti-Cantrell says the city pursued the annexation to make the area more attractive with the expansion of I-69 along the Purchase Parkway. But, teachers at the annexed schools will see their payroll tax increase from 1 to 2 percent. Rochetti-Cantrell says the tax increase will be implemented over the course of 4 years.

Graves County Fiscal Court members are moving toward all but banning commercial hog farm operations. The court's move Monday night reverses a 2014 decision to lift an existing ban.

Sixteen months was enough time for Colley farms to begin construction on their own large-scale pig farm. When neighbors Margaret Merida and Lillian Doughaday caught wind of the operation they notified their neighbors. They worked with Judge Executive Jesse Perry who initiated the first of three required readings for a new ordinance.

Supporters of a wet/dry special election in Graves County and Mayfield appear to be changing their petitioning strategy ahead of projected light voter turnout in Tuesday’s General Election.
