Beshear: Don't Text and Drive

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is sending a message to drivers that texting and driving is not acceptable. Beshear will meet with AT&T Kentucky, state police and an automobile wreck survivor today at the Capitol to sign the “Don’t Text and Drive Day” proclamation. The group will also announce a campaign encouraging Kentuckians to make a pledge that they won’t text while driving. The state passed a law against texting and driving two years ago.

Williams Interested in Judicial Appointment

Kentucky Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, would consider a judicial appointment if Governor Steve Beshear offered the position, a spokesperson confirmed.

Rumors have been swirling in Frankfort that Beshear is planning to offer his bitter rival Williams, who is a trial lawyer, the open circuit court seat in his southern Kentucky district. The seat was left vacant due to the death of Judge Eddie Lovelace last month.

"If there is an appointment offer, Sen. Williams will consider it," says Senate GOP spokeswoman Lourdes Báez-Schrader.

Tax Commission Gets Final Reports as Deadline Draws Near

Kentucky’s Blue Ribbon Tax Commission has spent months learning how the state’s tax system works, and is now beginning to hammer out proposals to reform the state’s tax code.

The commission met again today in Frankfort to hear some final reports from the Beshear administration on how Kentucky’s current revenue systems work. State representative and commission member Jim Wayne says the reports served as another reminder of how far behind Kentucky has fallen. He says,

Beshear on economic development trip to India

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear is on a seven-day trip to India to promote the state to business owners who would like to locate in the U.S.  Beshear arrived in India Tuesday for his third trip to the world's second most populous nation.  Economic Development Secretary Larry Hayes will join Beshear on the trip.  Beshear's office says an India-based packaging company, Flex Films, is investing $180 million in Kentucky as a result of his previous visit to the country.  Beshear also made economic development trips to Taiwan and Japan in May and Germany and France in July.

Beshear Appoints Team to Evaluate Veteran Health Policies

Over the past three years, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has reported a dramatic jump in the number of veterans in search of mental health services. In Kentucky, the outbreak of prescription drug abuse is also taking a toll. To better coordinate local, state, and federal agencies that deal with veteran’s health, Governor Beshear has appointed a team of health and military specialists to reevaluate the state’s policies. Retired Col. David Thompson heads up the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs.

New Limestone Processing Plant Comes to Lyon County

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear joined other state, local and business officials in Eddyville yesterday to announce H-and-G Limestone Products’ plans to begin operations in Lyon County. The company will invest almost one and a half million dollars to build a 22-thousand-500-square-foot processing plant employing 10 full-time workers. H&G Limestone produces material for roofing shingles and makes a calcium supplement used in animal food.
