Former Gubernatorial Candidate Gatewood Galbraith Dies

Lexington attorney Gatewood Galbraith, a perennial candidate in Kentucky politics for decades died late yesterday.

Galbraith was 64. His death was made public on Facebook by his former running mate Dea Riley. The cause of death has not yet been released, but LEX 18 is reporting the Fayette County coroner said Galbraith had been dealing with congestion and died in his sleep.

Lack of Coal No Surprise in Beshear Inaguration Speech

In his inauguration speech, Gov. Steve Beshear spoke about education and the importance of building a generation that can lead Kentucky in the future. But it was a far cry from the pro-coal rhetoric that dominated some of his speeches earlier this year. Beshear’s avoidance of the issue didn’t surprise many observers, who know where the governor stands on coal.

JCPS Board Delays Student Assignment Vote

The Jefferson County Board of Education has been presented a new student assignment plan after months of anticipation, but the board has delayed any decisions about implementing the plan until next month.

The new plan was proposed to the board at Monday night’s board meeting. The proposal maintains the current six clusters and boundaries the district uses to measure diversity, but includes new diversity criteria recommended by UCLA professor Gary Orfield, who provided the district with ideas in September.

Kentucky's Department of Community Based Services Commissioner Resigns

 

 

The commissioner of Kentucky’s Department of Community Based Services, which provides various welfare services like foster care and child protection, is stepping down amid growing criticism about the department’s handling of child abuse cases.

Patricia Wilson submitted her resignation last Friday; officials for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services say it was a personal decision.
