Rotten weather or not, crappie fishing is really good now on the lake. Maybe it's because there aren't many people going fishing right now because of the rain and wind, but whatever the crappies are biting.

Maybe we should be talking about hunting, because that's all most of the guys going into local sporting goods stores now seem to have on their minds. The modern firearms season for deer comes in Saturday morning, so be prepared to hear distant gunfire throughout the day.

Though the wind kept a lot of people off the lake last week, the weather has settled down again and the water temperature is headed into the low 60s. Fishing is pretty much hit-and-miss, with some anglers reporting good success on topwater lures including poppers, walking lures like zara spooks and buzzbaits, while others are beating the water to a froth without anything to show for it.

Murray, KY – With autumn's return, outdoor burn permits are again required in Tennessee. The fall fire season began Saturday and lasts until May 15. The permits are free and can be obtained by calling local Forestry Division offices. There's an online list at BurnSafeTN.org. Tennessee Forestry Division information forester Tim Phelps says the permit system focuses on fire safety and helps prevent wildfires by not issuing permits during unsafe periods. Tips on how to safely use fire to burn debris are also posted on the website.
