Preparations to demolish the Old Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake are expected to kick off as early as this afternoon.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says contractors are looking to begin saw cutting on the concrete deck of the 85-year-old structure this week.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is preparing to open the new $133 million Kentucky Lake bridge to traffic.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says the new four-lane U.S. 68/KY 80 Eggner’s Ferry Bridge will open to two-lane traffic in the next two to three weeks. Todd said it’s important to get traffic moved over to the new bridge now so the cabinet and contractors can plot the removal of the 84-year-old Eggner’s Ferry Bridge.

The Eggners Ferry Bridge reopened today to traffic across Kentucky Lake from Marshall County to Land Between the Lakes.  The bridge had been closed since late January after a cargo ship struck and collapsed a 322 foot span. Prior to the reopening the highway department allowed for visitors to walk or bike across the bridge.
