Kentucky Awarded $2.8M in Security Grants

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is giving Kentucky nearly $3 million in grants that will be distributed to agencies across the state.

The $2.8 million in grants will fund 119 projects. Governor Steve Beshear’s office says the money will fund training, citizen preparedness and equipment for first-responders, communications and infrastructure.

Senator Paul Shows Concern For 'FEMA-Purchased Drones'

Kentucky’s junior senator said he’s concerned about grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency being used to purchase drones for surveillance.

Republican Rand Paul expressed that view at a hearing today of the Senate’s Homeland Security Subcommittee. He claimed FEMA’s fusion centers, which were created by the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security to promote the sharing of information, do not have a stellar record for defending civil liberties.

Metropolis Honeywell Plant Receives Bomb Threat

The Honeywell Uranium Processing Facility is allowing some plant workers to leave while law enforcement and plant management continue investigating a report of an explosive device in the plant.

Honeywell went on lockdown after receiving the report this afternoon. Honeywell spokesman Peter Dalpe said law enforcement and members of the state bomb squad are on scene.

Glenda Adkisson on The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium

The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) is bringing a FREE Department of Homeland Security-certified course on Responding to the Functional Needs Populations of Rural America to Grand Rivers, Kentucky on January 24th. It's the first time this kind of training has been in our region. The deadline for registration for this program is Thursday, January 10. Glenda is the course instructor.

Mayfield Receives DHS Grant

The City of Mayfield is getting a $15,000 Homeland Security Grant. The city requested the grant to provide face masks and a mask leak/fit tester for the members of the Mayfield Fire Department. The grant comes despite a 50 percent reduction in Department of Homeland Security grants for the state. This year the commonwealth was able to award only $2.2 million dollars from approximately $11.8 million in statewide application requests.
