Paducah mayoral candidate Brandi Harless was in Washington, D.C. this week with members of the Mississippi Delta Leadership Academy to press western Kentucky issues on national officials.  

22 Kentucky counties are considered within jurisdiction of the Delta Regional Authority, which provides economic and infrastructure support for local projects.  

Delta Entrepreneurship Network

Local entrepreneurs will have their shot at success next month as part of the Delta Entrepreneurship Network’s annual pitch competition. Held October 6 at Murray State University, the Delta Regional Authority-operated event gives area businesspeople a chance to present their ideas to a panel of judges, similar to the network television program, “Shark Tank.”

A federal-state business authority is calling for entrepreneurs to enter its pitch competitions this fall which includes one at Murray State University.

The Delta Regional Authority will hold six Delta Challenge pitch competitions throughout the 8 state Delta region.

Paducah Seeking Grant to Repair Downtown Buildings

The City of Paducah is seeking a Delta Regional Authority grant through the States’ Economic Development Assistance Program (SEDAP) for improvements to downtown buildings.

Paducah Planning Director Steve Ervin told the City Commission he was seeking the grant at its Tuesday meeting.

Mayors from cities along the Mississippi River are calling on Congress to increase U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funding to keep commerce flowing on the waterway.

More than 100 people received free medical care on the first day of a week-long run for a free clinic in Mayfield.  The medical services are part of an Innovative Readiness Program hosted by the Delta Regional Authority  in partnership with the Department of Defense. The program provides budding military doctors training in disaster response situations before being deployed to duty. 

Mayfield City Officials are seeking grant funding to buy land for a new farmers’ market.  Mayor Teresa Cantrell said currently the town's market has no permanent home and sets up on the downtown square on Saturday mornings and a borrowed church parking lot on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. 

“We thought that was something communities needed, especially small rural communities like Mayfield," said Cantrell. "We need our farmers’ market and they needed a home to conduct their activities. It needs to be a visible place where they can get drive-by traffic and have regular hours.”

The Delta Regional Authority is sweetening the pot for cross-state applications for federal grants to strengthen training partnerships between community colleges and employers. 

Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Seth Harris said Friday that $474.5 million is available nationwide under the third round of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grants program. 

New data shows small businesses have led the Mississippi Delta region in job creation. The Delta Regional Authority released private-sector data Monday showing 90 percent of all new jobs in the area over the last 20 years have come from businesses with nine or fewer employees.
