Severe Weather Sweeps Through Western KY and Southern IL

Communities throughout western Kentucky and southern Illinois are contending with high water, hail damage, and downed trees this morning following severe storms that passed through our region last night. 

Residents in Beulah in Hopkins County reported a large funnel cloud at about 7:30 p.m., and a large wedge-shaped tornado close to a mile wide was reported in Christian an hour later.  Winds of up to 70 miles an hour were recorded near Elkton in Todd County. 

Owensboro Distillery Closer to Producing Bourbon

A distillery in Owensboro will once again produce Kentucky’s signature spirit.

Officials with TerrePURE Kentucky Distillers announced Tuesday afternoon that they are purchasing the Charles Medley Distillery and will create bourbon and other lines of spirits.

An environmental group is launching an aggressive campaign urging the retirement of the coal-burning Elmer Smith Power Plant in Owensboro.

A new agriculture forecast says plenty of rain and cooler temperatures mean Kentucky grain farmers could see productive yields later this year.

The Kentucky office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service says 85 percent of the commonwealth's corn crop and 84 percent of its soybean crop are rated good or excellent.

The Owensboro Museum of Science & History is raising money in order to bid on a collection of documents from the Amos Riley plantation in Daviess County – famous for its association with abolitionist Josiah Henson.

Henson was a runaway slave whose autobiography would inspire Harriet Beecher Stowe’s "Uncle Tom’s Cabin." He lived on the Yelvington plantation for several years in the 1820s.

A hospital in Daviess County is looking to bring additional primary care physicians to the region. Owensboro Medical Health System is recruiting two dozen doctors this year to meet the needs of the hospital's service area in western Kentucky and southern Indiana.

The City of Owensboro and Daviess County are restarting their juvenile drug court.  County Attorney Claud Porter says both are putting up 88,000 dollars per year to fund the program. The juvenile drug court was discontinued because of state budget cuts.

Valley Truck Equipment LLC will triple its workforce and improve its facilities in Daviess County. Governor Steve BeShear announced Thursday that the Utica business will expand adding 12 jobs and making $678,000 in improvements. Valley Truck Equipment began business in 2009 during the beginning of the economic downturn. Yet it has continued to thrive throughout the recession. The company sells, installs and repairs a variety of equipment for vehicles and currently has six employees.

Proposed zoning for a surface mine is causing quite a stir in Daviess County, Kentucky. The mine would be in a rural area outside of Owensboro called Pleasant Ridge- where mining has existed for decades. This mine, though, would be located next to a Girl Scout camp. Rose Krzton-Presson explores what this means not only for the camp, but for Pleasant Ridge, Owensboro, and Daviess County’s economic growth in recent years.
