The Pearl of the Purchase Half Marathon and 5K run is Saturday, Nov. 16, at Graves County High School. Race-day registration starts at 8, and the race starts at 9. Internationally-acclaimed pianist Frederic Chiu presents a solo piano recital titled "Classical Smackdown: Debussy vs. Prokofiev" Monday night at 8 in the Performing Arts Hall on the Murray State campus. The interactive recital pits the works of two composers in a head-to-head matchup. Audience members vote for their favorite, and the results are posted on classicalsmackdown.com. The performance is free and open to the public.

On this day in 1883, The Metropolitan Opera House opened with a performance of Charles Gounod's Faust, starring Christina Nilsson. It was a major success, with some of its first subscribers including members of the Morgan, Roosevelt, and Vanderbilt families. Today The Met has an annual budget of $325 million.
