Datebook: August 27 - Mariner 2 Goes to Venus 50 Years Ago

Though our curiosity has recently turned to Mars, NASA launched a probe to Venus on this day in 1962. Mariner 2 was the first space probe to conduct a successful planetary encounter. Though no cameras were on board (too cloudy), it collected important details on Venus' atmosphere. Mariner 2 now floats in space, defunct, pondering the meaning of its brief existence.

Datebook: August 24 - Pluto Gets Demoted 6 Years Ago

Poor Pluto... On this day in 2006, the International Astronomical Union redefined the term "planet." Under the new rules, Pluto is now considered a Dwarf Planet. But we love it just the same.

The Murray Band Boosters Fall Pancake Breakfast is tomorrow morning from 7:30 to 10:30 at the MurrayMiddle School cafeteria.  A $5 ticket buys all-you-can-eat pancakes, eggs, sausage, and a drink.  Proceeds help with instrument repairs, equipment, transportation, and other band expenses.

Datebook: August 23 - Gene Kelly Turns 100

Gene Kelly was a dancer and singer best known for Singin' in the Rain and An American in Paris. In the 1940s and 50s, he transformed Hollywood musicals and brought ballet to the big screen. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Kelly the 15th Greatest Male Star of All Time. We'll dance to that!

Tomorrow night offers three art exhibit receptions on the Murray State University campus.  Artwork by Benjamin Rogers, David Carpenter, and Esther Randall is displayed in the Clara M. Datebook: August 21 - Joe Strummer Turns 60

Joe Strummer (1952-2002) was an iconic figure in the British punk movement, and co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist for The Clash. He died of a heart defect in 2002. Shortly after his death, The Clash were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Blast some "London Calling" today, as tribute.

Datebook: August 20 - Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture Debuts 130 Years Ago

The 1812 Overture composed by Tchaikovsky rocked the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow on this day in 1882. It's best known for the climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes, and brass fanfare finale. It's also a great song to set your alarm clock to play.

Datebook: August 16 - First Cartoon in Color Released 82 Years Ago

Fiddlesticks was the first animated sound cartoon filmed in color (two-tone technicolor) and it was released on this day in 1930, with no fiddlesticks at all! Even though it's largely lost in history, we could still learn a thing or two from Flip the Frog. Watch the film!

The Yeiser Art Center in Paducah presents “A Feeble Armada,” an exhibit by Southern Indiana artist Rob Millard-Mendez.  Eleven boat sculptures are constructed from both traditional materials and more playful elements such as mousetraps, dice, and coins. The exhibit opens with a reception Saturday night from 5 to 7, and is then on display during regular museum hours through September 22.  See more attheyeiser.org.

Datebook: August 14 - Gary Larson Turns 62, Steve Martin Turns 67

We love 'em both! Almost everyone at some point has had (or wanted)  a Far Side calendar designed by one Gary Larson, and we've all laughed at Steve Martin's absurdist charm. Martin once said, "What is comedy? Comedy is the art of making people laugh without making them  puke."

The Special Olympics holds bowling signups Thursday at 6PM at the Murray Central Park Courthouse Pavilion. New athletes ages 8 to adult, peers who partner with an athlete in competition, and volunteers are welcome. Activities will also include games and food. Datebook: August 13 - King Louis XVI Declared an Enemy of the People 220 Years Ago

Louis the 16th had the misfortune of being king around the time the French had enough of absolute monarchy. His assistance in the American Revolution and a series of domestic reforms led France into a financial crisis which erupted into the French Revolution. As a result, Louis was arrested and executed by guillotine - the only French king ever to be executed.
