Commission to Give Opinion on Illinois Facility Closure Plan

A legislative commission is scheduled to give its opinion on Illinois Governor Pat Quinn's plans to close several state facilities, including the Tamms maximum security prison in southern Illinois. But the commission's vote is advisory only and the governor can close the prisons, mental institutions and offices no matter the findings. Quinn says closing the prisons would save money, while closing other facilities would lead to improved care for people with developmental disabilities. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability is scheduled to convene this morning.

Tentative Merger Vote Set May 1st

The Charter County Government Commission have changed a plan for the proposed merger of Paducah and McCracken governments. Vice Chairman Tom Garrett says the changes reflect concerns residents voiced during public forums held earlier in the year. The changes clarify the role of a transitional committee appointed to speed the merger if the plan passes and moves elections for new officials from 2013 to 2014 to avoid a special election. Agriculutre Commissioner to Visit Graves

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer is the featured speaker at the Purchase Area Cattleman’s Assosciation dinner tonight at Graves County High School. Comer is the founder and owner of James Comer Jr. Farms,a 950-acre beef, timber and hay farm in his native Monroe County. Comer’s speech is scheduled for 7:15 pm at the Graves County High School Cafeteria.

KentuckyY Tax Reform Commission to Hold Public Meetings

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's tax reform commission is scheduled to hold its first meeting public meeting next week. Beshear announced Friday members will meet at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet headquarters in Frankfort tomorrow. The commission was set up to review the Commonwealth's tax code and recommend changes to better enable the state to withstand economic downturns and to make taxes more equitable for taxpayers. The recommendations are expected by November 15th.

Beshear Unveils Tax Commission Members

Governor Steve Beshear has put together a bipartisan group of 23 Kentuckians to serve on his tax commission.

The group is made up partially of lawmakers from each party, although they won’t be able to vote on commission issues. Other members include former University of Kentucky president Lee Todd, banker and Republican fundraiser Marion Forcht, and Louisville businessman Junior Bridgeman.

The commission's recommendations for changes to the state tax code are due by November 15, well after the current legislative session ends.
