Reclaimed & Re-purposed, via Paducah Life

Recent clean up efforts at the Columbia Theatre in downtown Paducah sparked a creative endeavor with local artists. The Paducah Art House Alliance is hosting an exhibit and sale of artwork Thursday night (June 9) created by found objects in the historic space. On Sounds Good, Austin Carter speaks with Darlene Mazzone about "Reclaimed & Repurposed) at the Paducah School of Art & Design, the origins of the idea and some of the work on display and for sale.

Restoration work is underway in the historic Columbia Theater in downtown Paducah. Geoffrey Steward leads Atlanta-based International Final Arts Conversation Studios in uncovering the stained glass ceiling, investigating the original paint palettes from 1927 and its modernization in the 1950s. They are also repairing the fire curtain, damaged when the movie screen was installed, patching the holes, sealing the asbestos and repainting the New York Harbor scene. On Sounds Good, Matt Markgraf stopped by the Columbia to learn more about the restoration effort.

Columbia Club

Paducah’s Columbia Theater will need contaminates removed before any renovations can begin. Paducah grants administrator Sheryl Chino said the city is applying for a two hundred thousand dollar federal Brownfield Field Clean-up Grant to remove toxins from the historic theater.

The Columbia Club has received a $25,000 donation, made through the Community Foundation of West Kentucky, to aid in restoration of the Columbia Theater in Downtown Paducah.

Paducah city officials are passing control of the historic downtown Columbia Theatre to a nonprofit group for renovation.

Paducah Renaissance Alliance unveils new nonprofit partner

The Paducah Renaissance Alliance is unveiling the new face of its nonprofit partner at Paducah’s Barbecue on the River next weekend. The Columbia Club will work to preserve and restore historic sites in Paducah. Paducah Renaissance Alliance director Lisa Thompson says the club’s first project will focus on the historic Columbia Theater. Thompson says Information about The Columbia Club will be available at the Quilt Museum booth next weekend.
